First Aid for Mental Health Qualifications (RQF)

Each year approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health condition and at least 1 in 6 employees experience common mental health problems in the workplace. Research has shown that work is the biggest cause of stress which can stop people performing at their best.

Who are the courses for

We offer a range of courses in First Aid for Mental Health from increasing awareness around mental health, to supervising First Aid for Mental Health in the workplace. There is a course to suit you whether it’s just learning more about mental health or learning how you can help colleagues, family and friends. The Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications allow you to act as the workplace First Aider for Mental Health.

All courses are Ofqual and RQF recognised qualifications.

  • Level 1 First Aid for Mental Health Awareness – ½ Day
  • Level 2 First Aid for Mental Health Qualification – 1 Day
  • Level 3 Supervising First Aid for Mental Health Qualification – 2 Day​​

What will I study?

Level 1 First Aid for Mental Health Awareness – ½ Day
This 4-hour qualification provides you with the knowledge to recognise a range of mental health conditions, how to start a supportive conversation and when and how to signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help. You will learn how to recognise and manage stress. You will gain the knowledge to identify when a person may have a condition and know where they can get help.

Level 2 First Aid for Mental Health Qualification – 1 Day
This popular 1-day course covers the content of the Level 1 qualification and also expands on the effects of drugs and alcohol, incorporates the First Aid for Mental Health Action Plan and covers ways in which a positive mental health culture can be supported within a workplace.
  • You will gain the knowledge to recognise a range of mental health conditions
  • Know how to start a supportive conversation and when and how to signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help.
  • Learn how to recognise and manage stress and understand the impact of substance abuse.
  • Be introduced to the first aid action plan for mental health and how to put it in place
  • Know how to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace.
 
Level 3 Supervising First Aid for Mental Health Qualification – 2 Day
The 2-Day course covers all of Level 1 and Level 2 course content as well as modules on:

  • Understanding a range of mental health disorders and the support/therapy provided by professional healthcare providers
  • Detailed learning around the characteristics, including signs and/or symptoms, of each of the following mental health conditions such as Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Self-harm,  Suicide, Eating disorders, Personality disorders, Bipolar,  Psychosis, Schizophrenia
  • An understanding of the support & therapy provided by professional healthcare providers for the following mental health conditions: Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Self-harm, Suicide, Eating disorders, Personality disorders, Bipolar, Psychosis, Schizophrenia
 
The qualifications will not allow you to diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals. They will equip you with the skills and knowledge to identify when a person may have a condition and know where you can go to get help.

Do I need any Pre-requisites to undertake a course?

The qualification is available to learners aged 16 or over.
It is recommended that learners should hold a minimum of Level 1 in literacy or equivalent to undertake this qualification.
